One
irony in the recall election campaign was Governor Davis' obvious
shift to the left in order to appeal to a segment of the voting
population (specifically, Latino voters) he had neglected with his
middle-of-the-road approach. This cartoon compares the desperation
and fear Davis felt with that experienced every day by immigrants
(especially from Mexico) who are struggling to survive in California;
this struggle became evident to Davis only after his political life
was on the line.
