At the beginning of 2004, a couple of high profile surveys showed Californians displaying a more positive outlook regarding the future of the economy. This, despite the state having some of the highest unemployment rates in the country, consistently exorbitant housing prices and meager job recovery. Bringing optimism and unemployment together is not easy, but like the surveys, the smiley masks in my cartoon manage to pull it off.
