In keeping with his promise to promote job creation throughout the state, the Governator did not hesitate to put his words into action. Only it was not the sort of action that fits neatly within Schwarzenegger’s message of more government openness and less special interest influence. Rather, by creating the privately run California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth and appointing key campaign donors with a stake in state business to run it, Schwarzenegger has undermined everything he promised to voters. Make no mistake—this governor depends on the privacy situations like this afford him, so that voters are spared the details of his hypocrisy and backroom wheeling and dealing with the state’s real decision makers.
